Morrison. Where the arts come out to play!

Creativity runs deep in Charlotte.
There are some who say that isn’t so, but we – and you – know better. At the individual level, it’s a matter of knowing where to look. And at the community level, it’s a matter of embracing the arts and creating bridges between those who create it and the rest of us who are inspired by it.

As one of Charlotte’s true “new urban” neighborhoods, Morrison is designed to be a place that matters in the life of the city. And since creativity feeds our collective soul, Morrison is full of streetscapes, storefronts and architectural niches – both indoors and out – that create a multifaceted gallery for both visual and performance art.

To date, we’ve hosted:

• Art With Heart Auction Preview. The inaugural pre-auction preview of artwork donated to one of Charlotte’s premier arts-oriented fundraising events. Over 300 supporters of United Family Services and the arts attended a gala private reception, with scores of paintings and crafts from both collected and emerging artists displayed for three weeks pre-Auction throughout Morrison’s retail and residential venues.

• Circle of Trees. A prominently displayed collection of Christmas trees decorated by staff and volunteers of eight local community organizations, with a candlelit bagpipe lighting processional followed by donation cards at all Morrison retailers and a Web site featuring links to online giving for each non-profit.

• Collaborative Arts Theatre’s “Sublet Experiment”, an on-location play staged in a two-bedroom model here at our “721” condominium
• The first gallery exhibition by Emerging Arts, a non-profit initiative created to increase public exposure for emerging artists from our area
• Storefront displays of original paintings, woodworking, basketry and furniture from local artists.

Over time, we hope to showcase the depth and breadth of artistic expression in Charlotte. From visual arts – such as painting, pottery, glassware, sculpture, weaving, woodworking and more – to performance arts like musical concerts, dance, poetry readings, street theatre and beyond.

You’ll find new and inspiring art every day at Morrison – in our restaurants, our shops, our offices, our storefronts – even outdoors. The palette is everchanging, with new pieces and performances always in the wings.

Our charter is pretty broad – we want to create a place that matters, for our merchants and shoppers, our residents, our neighbors throughout the city, and for the artistic community that enriches all of our lives.
