Kristan Five Skinner, known in the art community as Kristan Five, specializes in large-scale abstract oil paintings with a focus on color and texture.

“In theory, my work is inspired by aerial views of our earth’s landscape. Globally, much of nature shares the intrinsic beauty of organic lines, textures and color with man’s aesthetic contribution of synthetic elements. This visual union of magnificent proportions appears to have been painted with a gigantic brush on an enormous canvas.”

Ms. Skinner was discovered by the decision makers at Wachovia in 2006 and has since created eleven commissioned pieces for Two Wachovia Center. Recently, she was commissioned to do three large-scale paintings for the Wachovia Securities Private Client Group.

In the 1990s, Ms. Skinner worked with an international environmental design firm as an art director. She had several opportunities to travel abroad and was inspired by European culture and Scandinavian design. This time marks the beginning of her focus on abstract, color-based work. She started k5 creative studios in 1999 and offers everything from original art to environmental design.

Ms. Skinner was awarded the Scholastic Inc. art scholarship, offered to students who have been designated portfolio winners on the national level, and graduated from the Columbus College of Art & Design in 1994.

Artist and Filmmaker Exhibits 8mm Film Prints in May at Morrison Arts Initiative

Kelly Koeppel will be the featured artist in May at the Morrison Arts Initiative.  She will exhibiting work from her recent series of large format 8mm film prints.  “I started shooting Super8 film about ten years ago, documenting trips through Europe and the U.S., and nights out with frineds.  Last year I made a seires of large format prints from individual 8mm frames.  They are exciting pieces because they capture and suspend moments in time that would otherwise be overlooked.  There are ghostly images of faces and people, that in the film, just flash by on the screen.   And the qualities of the film translated to such a large format can’t be replicated by other means.  They are truly unique.”

Ms. Koeppel has been an artist for more than fifteen years and has exhibited her work throughout the United States.  She is also the owner of k2forma, an advertising and marketing firm in Mooresville.  The exhibition runs from April 29 through June 2, 2008.  The public is invited to attend the opening reception with the artist on May 14, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Sharon Dowell's work is included in the permanent collections of Fidelity Investments, The Federal Reserve Bank and Duke Power Company.  Inspired by mixture of life that surrounds her, she explores the construct of texture, breaking down images and fading her subject to a memory or an emotion. The moving of shapes becomes an intellectual voyage as she articulates impressions of her environment.

Patrick Glover earned his BFA from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, New York, NY. Glover's work is inspired by the ambiguity of perception. He purposefully chooses impersonal imagery with which the viewer is invited to add their own narrative.

Dana Masters, Charlotte, NC

Born in New Jersey, I was driven to paint at the age of 17 by a deep compulsion to express things that, at the time, could not be said. I was immediately drawn to figurative work but quickly incorporated abstract color and form as my art developed into a vital emotional outlet.

Natalie Bork, Charlotte, NC

Located in YAMA

Natalie Bork was born in 1976 in Buffalo NY. She sold her first art piece at eight years of age to a teacher that was moved by her abstract floral composition; at that time her passion for art was ignited and grew into the remarkable career she has today as a professional artist.

Elizabeth Ross , Charlotte, NC

My goal as an artist continues to be what it has been for countless years: to make visible in painting and photography the exquisite phenomena in the natural world that speak to the human heart. I wish to be a poet, to speak of the transient nature of the seasons of the earth and of our lives.
